How it all started:
A bronze plaque on the top of the observation hill provides that the hills were formed due to weathered formations of a certain kind of marine limestone on top of a solid layer of clay. But up to date this doesn’t prove the exact findings of its existence.
Along with this accepted theory are legends that spread enormously. There is the love chronicle between a giant named Arogo and the mortal girl called Aluya and the other is the great fight between two giants which leads to its formation.
A Love Story
The romantic legend shares how a young and gentle giant fell in love with a mortal despite being desired with female giants. Agoro lived a lonesome life and used to stay near the river to wonder and reflect. One night, he saw Aluya in the river and instantly struck to its beauty that he always watches out for her in the area.
A rumor reached Arogo that Aluya would soon marry a man her parents chose for her.The night before Aluya’s wedding, Agoro kidnapped Aluya. Seeing a giant, Aluya screamed, kicked and cried, but to no avail. Arogo was successful in abducting Aluya.
In the giant’s cave, Arogo tried to give Aluya food and water but the girl kept on crying. Her sadness reached her heart that she died with tears in her eyes. Arogo buried her and kept his vigil. He cried for days and months. Giant tears fell to the ground. He cried a thousand years for the loss of his love. After sometime, Arogo’s tears hardened and became what we know today as Chocolate hills. The Hills were witnesses of an unrequited love of the years go by.
The Great Fight
Legend has it that the hills came into existence when two giants threw stones and sand at each other in a fight that lasted for days. When they were finally exhausted, they made friends and left the island, but left behind the mess they made which were believed to be the hills.
